Milledgeville, Georgia: A capital casualty of the Civil War

This town in central Georgia was the capital for 60 years since 1806 after it was decided to move it from Savannah. The Civil War changed that permanently.

This is the former capitol now on the campus of the Georgia Military College in the Statehouse Square Historic District. A few blocks west on the campus of Georgia State College is the peach colored former Governor's mansion. Go to www.gcsu.edu to visit the mansion.

In the closing year of the Civil War, the capital relocated to the Macon City Hall in 1864 before returning to Milledgeville the next year. After the war, the federal delegation set up shop in Atlanta and moved the affairs of state there. Milledgeville tried in vain several times in subsequent years to reclaim it's capital status.
